A Squirrel’s Eye View: Center of Attention

December 16th, 2011

As I squirrel I’m pretty fond of trees. In fact, I love trees! Not only do I live in trees and play in trees, I eat trees. Why would I eat my home and my playground? Because I don’t have a toothbrush! I chew on tree branches to clean my teeth. Chewing on branches also sharpens my teeth. Clean, sharp teeth are very important to squirrels. Just look at all of those branches to chew up there, I better get busy!

A Squirrel’s Eye View: First Snowfall

November 19th, 2011

It snowed! It snowed! It snowed! You might be surprised that I am excited about this, being a squirrel and all. But I love the snow, it is so much fun to play in! Do you want to know another secret? I also love the salt. Us squirrels need some salt in our diet and when it snows you humans put salt on the roads. I find that salt in the dirt and snow and ice on the side of the road and eat it. It’s delicious and I wait all summer for this special treat!

A Squirrel’s Eye View: Wonky Sunset

November 11th, 2011

I don’t like to go out at night so I was trying to get back to my drey before nightfall. As I was running across the top of a railing, taking a short-cut you know, I looked back and caught a glimpse of the moon at sunset. Sorry about the wonky angle, but it’s difficult for a squirrel to take a picture while running to beat nightfall. I’m sure you understand!

A Squirrel’s Eye View: My Drey

October 24th, 2011

I’m on my way home! I live in a nest called a drey that is made of twigs with the leaves still attached. Do you see it in the top of my tree? It is about the size of a football, maybe a little bigger.  I built it way up high and lined it with dry grass, shredded bark, moss and feathers. This is my summer drey, in the winter I will make a new nest in a hollow tree trunk. I’ll let you in on a little secret…this is not my only home! I have dreys in all of my favorite places.
